Radio show booker
Latino USA seeks a resourceful, quick-thinking booker who can work with the production team to develop interview segments by finding and booking compelling guests for a weekly public radio show distributed by NPR.
Tasks include:
- Researching newsmakers, experts and guests in a variety of fields (politics, economics, education, health, culture) for interview segments on the show. Guests should be selected for: how knowledgeable they are about the topic at hand, making timely contributions to discussion of the topic, and their level of experience with broadcast media;
- Pre-interviewing to prepare guests for interview and to prepare host and producers;
- Compile prep material on topics and guests for host and producers;
- Develop interview questions in conjunction with host and producers;
- Develop and maintain contacts with stations and studios around the country;
- Coordinate with stations and studios around the country to schedule and carry out recording sessions, including communicating Latino USA’s technical standards and procedures;
- Maintain relationships with new and established guests;
- Originate and pitch possible subjects for interviews on show or as subjects of show segments;
- Pitch in with other aspects of production of weekly show as needed.
Desired qualifications:
- Familiarity with a broad variety of national news in politics, economy, education, culture, legislation, health and culture;
- Highly skilled at researching a broad variety of topics;
- Familiarity with a variety of sources for possible interview subjects – especially people who are not “the usual suspects” – and ability to quickly reach needed sources;
- Would prefer a candidate who has a minimum of two years experience researching and booking guests for broadcast media;
- Excellent attention to detail is key;
- Ability to manage multiple projects on tight deadlines;
- Ability to problem-solve on deadline;
- Strong writing skills and sound news judgment critical;
- Self-starter and self-motivated, eager to work on a small team, performing a wide range of functions;
- Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.
This position reports to the Senior Producer, but involves working closely with the host/Executive Producer and other members of the show production team. This position is p/t through June 2013, f/t thereafter.

Radio Producer
Latino USA seeks two creative, resourceful producers to form part of a small, dynamic team to work on weekly production of an award-winning public radio show distributed by NPR.
This year, the program is undergoing some significant changes, and we welcome producers with adventurous ideas about the future of radio that can be tested for a newsmagazine that coversinformation, ideas and culture.
Both positions report to the Senior Producer. Depending on experience and ability, one of these positions will have operational responsibility for assembly of the various segments of the program, and function as a sort of deputy to the Senior Producer or a line producer.
Tasks include:
- Editing and mixing of segments and host tracks for the weekly show, as well as assembly of segments reported by outside contributors;
- Reviewing audio materials that come in from outside contributors for audio quality that meets the show’s production standards, and alerting Senior Producer of any problems;
- On occasion, resolving any issues related to audio quality of material submitted by outside contributors;
- Researching and developing segment ideas for the weekly show, including approach, sound profile, sources and characters and any other elements, for segments to be produced either in-house or by an outside contributor;
- Participating in and contributing to weekly editorial meetings, bringing in and helping to develop and refine story ideas, to be produced by self, by other members of the production team, or by outside contributors;
- Participating in and contributing to weekly production meetings, working with show production team to determine timely completion of assignments for weekly and long-term production goals;
- Assembly and upkeep of production documents including recording and production scripts, pitch list, monthly programminglist, project lists;
- Managing some relationships with outsidecontent-sharing partners to ensure timely exchange of information and materials;
- Interface with in-house engineer and, as needed, with contractor engineer, to provide all necessary elements for mixing and editing the weekly show are in place and available in a timely fashion, and, as needed, supervise mixing, promos and archiving;
- Some script writing, in-house and field recording;
- Supervise securing needed transcriptions, translations and voiceovers;
- Producing and managing social media content that further expands the Latino USA brand and its productions; active knowledge of twitter, Facebook and all social media platforms.
- Supervise production assistant and/or intern in updating show website content and social media posts;
- Working closely with the Senior Editor to fully produce some segments for broadcastManaging and supervising one or both interns
- Managing and supervising one or both interns.
Desired Qualifications:
- Three or more years of public radio production experience, with at least one year of experience producing for a show on air, or comparable experience;
- Strong radio storyteller, with a sense of how to evoke character, place and narrative through sound;
- Excellent audio editing skills and strong mixing skills using ProTools, preferably version 10;
- Strong familiarity with NPR production and audio quality standards;
- Able to communicate clearly and precisely about issues related to editing, mixing and audio quality with production team and with outside contributors;
- Strong writing skills and sound news judgment for radio and online;
- Familiar with issues and stories concerning Latino communities and other non-white communities, as well as understanding of the histories of various racial and immigrant groups in the U.S.;
- Able to manage long-term projects, for self and working in a team;
- Must be able to manage multiple projects on tight deadlines with excellent attention to detail;
- Able to problem-solve on deadline;
- Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.
