Futuro Media is an independent nonprofit organization producing multimedia journalism that explores and gives a critical voice to the diversity of the American experience, based in Harlem and founded in 2010 by award-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa. The company’s flagship production is NPR’s weekly news and culture program Latino USA. 

Futuro Studios is a new division at the company focused on storytelling through podcasts and other mediums. 

We’re looking for someone to join our expanding and vibrant team of audio journalists—to work as an associate producer assisting in the creation of a new documentary podcast focused on criminal justice. 

This is a full time, temporary, work-for-hire position, a 6-month contract beginning September 3 through February 28. 

The podcast traces the stories of people sentenced to life without parole as juveniles—and the landmark Supreme Court case that gave them a second chance. 

The position is based in New York City at Futuro Media’s offices in Harlem, and may involve travel to Philadelphia, where his story takes place. 

Duties and responsibilities

Reporting to the podcast’s Lead Producer with additional direction from the Executive Producer, the Associate Producer will:  

  • Generate ideas for story structure;
  • Do research and identify interviewees for the podcast;
  • Book interviews and prep host; 
  • Participate, as needed, on reporting trips (solo, with host, and/or with other producers);
  • Line produce, and edit interviews as needed;
  • Log, organize, and edit audio;
  • Assist in scripting the series; 
  • Assist in fact-checking scripts to ensure editorial integrity and quality of content;
  • Track host, interviewees and other producers;
  • Participate in group listens and offer feedback;


  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, criminal justice, or a related field, or comparable work experience;
  • 2+ years work experience in radio journalism, or 4+ years experience in other journalism medium plus some audio production experience;
  • Significant experience with ProTools;
  • Demonstrated interest in criminal justice;  
  • Commitment to diverse coverage in terms of sexual orientation, gender, points of view, culture and race;
  • Have an ear for good tape and excellent attention to detail;
  • Strong time management and organizational skills;
  • Ability to work independently while also fitting into a small, focused team;
  • Must love radio/podcasts.
